Biography

Dr. Médard is an award-winning professor, accomplished author, seasoned speaker, and an esteemed pioneer in engineering with a concentration in coding, wireless communications, and optical networking. She is a leading expert in wireless standards and the commercialization of related patents where she provides her expert services for matters involving optical networks and physical layer coding.

Dr. Médard is currently the NEC Professor of Software Science and Engineering at MIT where she teaches graduate courses on information theory, communications, networks, and probabilistic systems. She has published works covering 4G, 5G, 802.xx, satellite technology, and hybrid networks in 500 peer-reviewed publications that have received over 36,000 citations. She also holds more than 50 patents and many cognate international ones.

Additionally, Dr. Médard is Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, is the past Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications, and has been a Steering Committee Member and an Associate or Guest Editor of multiple IEEE publications in communications, networking, and security. She has received the 2017 IEEE Armstrong Achievement Award in wireless technology, the 2018 ACM Test of Time Award in wireless networking, and the 2022 IEEE Kobayashi award in networking, and has received over a dozen prizes for papers in networking and wireless communications. She is a fellow of the IEEE and a member of the National Academy of Engineering, the National Academy of Inventors, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the German National Academy of Sciences, Leopoldina.
